The direct answer
Even if you take the Class B theory test in English, prepare for concise Spanish during lessons and the practical test. Focus on action words, direction, safe stopping and “when possible” qualifiers. You do not need conversational fluency; you need to recognise an instruction without making an unsafe last-second manoeuvre.
- Best first vocabulary
- Direction + stopping + parking
- Safety rule
- Never obey an instruction unsafely
- Useful phrase

The commands to recognise first
| Spanish | Working meaning | Safe interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Siga todo recto | Continue straight ahead | Stay on the current road unless signs or markings require otherwise |
| Gire a la derecha / izquierda | Turn right / left | Prepare, signal, position and turn only where legal |
| Tome la primera salida | Take the first exit | Count legal exits from your entry point |
| Cuando sea posible, estacione | Park when possible | Choose a legal, safe place; it is not an emergency command |
| Detenga el vehículo | Stop the vehicle | Find a lawful safe stop unless the examiner specifies a place |
| Realice un cambio de sentido | Turn around / change direction | Select a permitted method and observe throughout |
| Incorpórese | Join / merge into traffic | Observe, signal and adapt without forcing priority |
| Continúe siguiendo las indicaciones | Continue following the signs | Navigate independently using the named destination |

What to do when you do not understand
Ask for the instruction to be repeated before acting: “¿Puede repetir, por favor?” If a direction arrives too late to complete safely, continue safely and wait for the next instruction. A missed turn is less serious than an abrupt unsafe manoeuvre.
Practise with your instructor using exactly one short instruction at a time, then combine it with mirror, signal, position, speed and observation routines. Language should become a trigger for a safe process, not a translation exercise while the car is moving.

A ten-minute daily language drill
- 1
Read five Spanish commands aloud and say the safe action in English.
- 2
Hear the same commands in a random order from an instructor or recording you have rights to use.
- 3
On a parked-car map or during a legal lesson, point to the lane, exit or stopping place you would choose.
- 4
Repeat the two commands that caused hesitation until the action is immediate.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need fluent Spanish for the practical driving test?
+
You need to understand the instructions used during your local test and respond safely. Build a compact command vocabulary and ask your autoescuela what language support, if any, the exam centre currently provides.
What if I misunderstand a direction?
+
Ask for repetition before acting. If it is too late to manoeuvre safely, continue safely rather than making an abrupt illegal or dangerous turn.
Does “when possible” mean immediately?
+
No. “Cuando sea posible” gives you responsibility to choose a lawful and safe opportunity. Observation and legality still come first.
