The direct answer
For an ordinary Indian car licence, plan to obtain a new Spanish licence: India does not appear in DGT’s complete exchange-agreement list updated 26 June 2026. A qualifying foreign licence is normally usable for at most six months after normal residence begins. A separate, narrow exchange route exists for professional drivers who meet employment and contribution conditions.

This only adds six calendar months. It does not decide whether your permit was valid on each day or replace DGT advice about residence, translations, conventions or document conditions.
01
The key decision: exchange or new licence
DGT publishes the full list of countries with a current exchange agreement. India is not on the version updated 26 June 2026. This is an inference from the complete official list—not a sentence in which DGT names India as rejected—and it should be checked again before you act because agreements can change.
For a standard private car licence, the useful planning assumption is therefore a new Spanish Class B licence. That means a medical fitness report, application, common theory test and practical road test.
02
The six-month window is not a six-month licence extension
DGT says qualifying non-EU licences are normally valid for no more than six months after normal residence in Spain begins. Your licence must also be valid, correspond to the vehicle and satisfy the applicable convention and translation requirements. An international driving permit is a translation/recognition document; it does not create an ordinary exchange agreement or reset the residence clock.
Use your actual residence date, immigration status and document conditions. If anything is ambiguous, ask DGT or a qualified adviser rather than relying on a generic calculator.

The fastest sensible Class B route
- 1
Book the authorised medical fitness check shortly before you are ready to apply; the initial certificate must be submitted within 90 days.
- 2
Choose English on the Class B theory-test application and begin original, source-linked practice immediately.
- 3
Apply independently for theory if that saves school administration time, or ask several schools for the earliest theory submission date.
- 4
In parallel, compare practical-lesson availability and test waiting times. The cheapest school with no instructor capacity is rarely the fastest route.
- 5
After passing theory, concentrate lessons around a likely practical date; a passed test remains valid for two years.
No legitimate service can guarantee an exam slot or pass. Waiting time varies by province, school capacity and season.
04
The professional-driver exception
DGT has a separate process for professional permits from countries without an agreement. It requires evidence such as at least six months of professional-driver employment in a legally established Spanish company or branch, Social Security contributions, a medical report and an official translation when required. It is not a shortcut for a normal private car licence.

Frequently asked questions
Can I exchange an Indian car licence for a Spanish one?
+
Not through the ordinary agreement route as of 30 August 2026, because India does not appear in DGT’s complete country-agreement list updated 26 June 2026. Recheck the list before applying.
Can I keep driving after six months with an international driving permit?
+
An international permit does not normally extend the residence-based validity of the underlying foreign licence. Verify your exact situation with DGT before driving after the six-month window.
Does having years of driving experience remove the Spanish tests?
+
Not for the ordinary new-licence route. Your experience can reduce the training you need, but it does not waive the required tests. The professional exchange exception has separate strict conditions.
